Publisher London William Mackenzie Seller ID 720 6 volumes, circa 1875, 4to. Original tan, red and black cover richly gilt with portrait of Hogarth on each volume, stamped. Spines richly gilt and very attractive. All volumes in excellent condition with only slight rubbing to spine ends and a couple of covers slightly darker with edge soiling. Internally very clean, pages fresh and bright, all tissue guards present, no writing or marks, a few finger marks, else very pleasing. Widely recognized by scholars and critics as the first native-born English artist of international standing, Hogarth was a prolific and admired portraitist and painter of everyday life (the works that Hogarth himself prized most highly), but his greatest contribution came with the large body of satirical paintings, drawings, and prints he created and which quickly spread his fame throughout England and Europe.
