Circa 1845. Attractive map with the Republic of Texas, the United States extending into present-day Canada, Russia in control of Alaska, and Mexico's northern border according to the Treaty of 1819. Surrounded by fully hand-coloured scenes of North and Central America including local animals, a ship stranded in the polar sea, and a Mayan Temple. A very popular and decorative 19th century map. Steel engraving, with finely engraved vignette borders. On the map Texas is an independent country: having revolted from Mexico in 1835, its independence was recognised 1840, but it joined the United States in 1845. According to the table the population of Texas was 200,000 and 19 million in the U.S! Some damp staining and soiling in margins. This map is often found in black and white or with partial colouring. This example is extra hand-coloured and very attractive.

Russian Alaska, Mexico
