Charles Darwin and Isaac Newton

Opticks
Author Name:   Newton, Isaac

Title:    Opticks

Publisher:   London William and John Innys 1721

Seller ID:   726

8vo, Opticks, third edition, the last printed in Newton’s lifetime. Includes title, 12 folding engraved plates, one slightly frayed at edge but rest near fine to fine, both advertisements preceding the text - Advertisement I and II advertisement 7pp., errata page, 2 pp. advertisement at rear with "Books printed for William and John Innys", contemporary calf, rebacked & recornered, very very good. One of the most readable of all the great classics of physical science, Opticks comprises a comprehensive survey of 18th-century knowledge of light, describing Newton’s own experiments with spectroscopy, colors, lenses, reflection, refraction and more in language the lay person can easily follow. The great achievement of the work was to show that colour was a mathematically definable property. Near fine inside and complete, a very handsome addition to any library.
