Welcome to Folio Fine Books, Rare books and Collectible books Antique Books

Illustration above - Paradise Lost - John Milton - Illustrated by Gustave Dore. c.1880. Folio. Classic full brown morocco stamped in blind and gilt with "Milton’s Paradise Lost, Illustrated by Gustave Doré" and large angel with sword in gilt. Very dramatic cover. Gustave Dore's romantic style of illustration, imaginative and richly detailed, was ideally suited to literary subjects. His wood-engraved illustrations for John Milton's monumental epic poem PARADISE LOST--recounting mankind's fall from the grace of God through the work of Satan--were among Dore's finest works. There’s a strangely compelling sense of gloom and horror in many of these scenes. Paper whiter and more supple than typically seen. Some light scuffing to top right cover, spine faded and corners rubbed. Very good+ to near fine, rare for a book this size. Two small spots verso first endpaper, inside back cover and endpaper half to full inch dampstain, rest of book immaculate. Lovely inner gilt dentelles. Images are nothing short of spectacular, one of Dore’s finest works in its finest presentation. All edges gilt. This book is a work of art. Solid and complete, two tomes in one volume with separate title pages. scarce edition with 2 frontispieces, 1 portrait and 35 exquisite plates by Amédée Varin in the style of Grandville, all hand-coloured. Some staining and foxing throughout rarely affecting plates. Quarter morocco with title in gilt on spine. Without a doubt some of the most breathtaking hand-coloured plates I’ve seen.
